  • 1 large large onion Choose a large onion for more petals.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper Adjust to taste.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Oil for frying Heat to 350°F (175°C).

Preparation

  • Peel the onion and slice off the top.
  • Cut the onion into 'petals' by making 12-16 vertical cuts, being careful not to cut all the way through.

Coating

  • In a bowl, mix flour, paprika, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  • Dip the onion in buttermilk, then coat it with the flour mixture.

Frying

  • Heat oil in a deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  • Fry the onion for 3-4 minutes or until it is golden brown.
  • Remove the onion and drain it on paper towels.

Serving

  • Serve warm, paired with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. To reheat, place the onion in an oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes, or until crispy again. You can add cheese to the mixture for a richer flavor.
